The UCSD faculty was ranked 10th in the nation in a study of graduate program quality conducted by the National Research Council and 7th among all state-supported colleges and universities in the United States by U.S. News and World Report. Our faculty counts among its members five Nobel Laureates, a Fields Medalist, seven MacArthur Foundation Fellows, two Pulitzer Prize winners, and seven recipients of the National Medal of Sciences. They also hold more than 123 Endowed Chairs.
Under the UC system of Shared Governance, UCSD faculty play a key role in running the University. Responsibilities are divided so that the Regents set broad policy, the administration has primary oversight for the organization and finances, and the Academic Senate plays a key role in educational issues, in addition to serving in an advisory capacity to both the Regents and the administration.
The Faculty at UCSD hold appointments in 43 academic departments and schools of the General Campus, the School of Medicine and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. In addition to having a departmental affiliation, General Campus faculty are also appointed to one of six undergraduate colleges. The college system at UCSD is designed to offer both our faculty and students the best of both worlds: the resources and clout of a world-class research university and the advantages of a small, more intimate college.
Many of UCSD's faculty are the recipients of the world's most prestigious awards in recognition of achievements and excellence. A small sampling of those so honored is listed on these pages.
