UC President's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program
As stated on the Web site of the UC Office of the President, the University of California President's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program was established in 1984 to encourage outstanding women and minority Ph.D. recipients to pursue academic careers at the University of California. This program offers postdoctoral research fellowships, faculty mentoring, and eligibility for a hiring incentive to qualified scholars in all fields whose research, teaching, and service will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity at the University of California.
In June 2008, the Office of the President announced that the incentive for UC campuses to consider and hire these fellows into faculty positions has been extended for three years. UCOP has advised that hires from this program may be made pursuant to a regular search or by a waiver of regular search procedures.
In preparing for an open recruitment, UCSD departments are advised to create job postings that advertise positions in broadly defined disciplines that will encourage many qualified individuals, including those who are UC President’s Postdoctoral Fellows, to apply and be carefully compared to other applicants. A recruitment in which the discipline of the position is too narrowly defined may tend to exclude many qualified candidates whose disciplines fall slightly outside of the parameters of the position. Whenever possible, recruit UC fellows via an open recruitment.
When a recruitment is not in place by which a fellow could be considered, the department may submit a request to waive the open search process. The justification for such a request might include the skills and qualifications of the candidate, the needs of the department, and an assessment of the likelihood that an open recruitment would not produce a more competitive candidate in the field.
