The Department of Bioengineering in the Jacobs School of Engineering of the University of California, San Diego, invites applications for Lecturer with Security of Employment (Lecturer SOE, which closely parallels a tenured professorial appointment) or Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment (Lecturer PSOE, which parallels the position of an assistant professor on track for tenure). Candidates should have expertise in graduate and undergraduate education in bioengineering, and a record of effective and innovative teaching at the interface between engineering and biology. The responsibilities encompass the teaching of core courses including laboratories, improvement of curriculum, organization of teaching assignments, and development of new educational initiatives, including the preparation and submission of grant applications related to education. Applicants should note that this is not a research faculty position. The Department of Bioengineering enjoys close collaboration with the School of Medicine and Divisions of Biological and Physical Sciences.

UCSD Education Studies -- Lecturer in Math Education

 

The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Education Studies Program invites applications for the position of Lecturer in Math Education, beginning July 1, 2009. The successful candidate will teach required credential courses in secondary mathematics education and will also teach other undergraduate and graduate courses in the Education Studies program, which will be assigned based on expertise. The candidate will also supervise secondary mathematics student teachers and interns in local secondary schools and assist with school placements.

 

Required qualifications include: a California Single Subject Credential in Mathematics; eight or more years of outstanding teaching at the secondary level; previous work mentoring and/or supporting student teachers, intern teachers, and/or apprentice teachers; knowledge of San Diego area public schools and districts; leadership experience at the school, district, or county levels; and a strong and demonstrated commitment to furthering equity, diversity, and the improvement of public education.

Additional desired qualifications include: secondary science credential, multiple subjects credential, and/or a BCLAD credential; graduate degree; experience teaching at the postsecondary level; experience recruiting and preparing mathematics teachers; expertise in educational technology; experience in teaching courses in mentoring/tutoring.

 

The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary faculty whose research interests include educational reform, linguistic and cultural diversity, distributed cognition and learning, teacher professional development, school leadership and change, family and school partnerships, and uses of educational technology in teaching and learning. Department: Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Position Title: Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment (LPSOE)

Description:

The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) Department at the University of California, San Diego (http://mae.ucsd.edu) seeks outstanding applicants for a Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment (LPSOE) in Aerospace Engineering Design.

  The Lecturer will be responsible for:
 
  • full-time instruction of the department's aerospace design courses,
  • development and maintenance of instructional methods and curricula for the undergraduate aerospace program and design courses,
  • acting as consultant to the chair in the formulation of educational policies and new program developments,
  • working and coordinating with other design instructors to develop design across curricula.
 

In addition, the successful candidate will provide service to the University by participating in committees and departmental service commitments. An excellent machining and design lab with four dedicated full time staff is available to assist the LPSOE in teaching design courses. The successful applicant will also collaborate with an existing LSOE in the mechanical engineering curriculum.

 

A Ph.D. in a relevant field of engineering, or equivalent combination of exceptional aerospace design experience and demonstrated strength in theoretical analysis, is required. Applicants must have a strong record of excellence, innovation, and passion for teaching, broad-based experience in aeronautical and/or astronautical systems engineering design, along with strong interpersonal, writing and computer skills. The position is a nine month (100% time) appointment. An LPSOE position closely parallels that of a tenure-track faculty member.

Sixth College, the newest of the six undergraduate colleges at the University of California, San Diego, seeks an outstanding educator to serve as Director of Academic Programs. The position will be a Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment (LPSOE). The UCSD college system provides undergraduates with small living and learning communities within the larger research university, and the core curriculum provides the academic and thematic foundation for the college. The LPSOE is a Faculty Senate position comparable to a tenure track assistant professor whose expertise and responsibilities center on undergraduate education.

  The Sixth College academic program begins with Culture, Art, and Technology (CAT), a three-quarter, interdisciplinary freshman core curriculum structured not around Great Books, but Great Questions. Our central question is: How does cultural, artistic and technological change happen? The college academic program is completed by a one-quarter practicum and a one-quarter upper-division writing course.   The Director of Academic Programs is responsible for teaching in the freshman core program; for recruiting faculty to teach and working with them to develop the curriculum and implement pedagogical innovations related to the Sixth College digital and visual literacy goals; for supervising program staff, including the Associate Director for Writing, the Associate Director for Technology, and the Associate Director for the Practicum; for managing program resources; and for facilitating the integration of the academic programs with student life programs at the college. The Director reports to the college Provost. The ideal candidate will hold a Ph.D. in the humanities or social sciences, or an M.F.A. ; a record of excellence in teaching at the lower-division undergraduate level, and outstanding interpersonal and communications skills. Experience with writing instruction, interdisciplinary pedagogy, and collaborating with faculty from a variety of disciplines is also desirable.
