About the Division of Physical Sciences

The Division of the Physical Sciences is comprised of three large academic departments - Chemistry and Biochemistry, Mathematics, and Physics - each with a full range of undergraduate and graduate programs, and research facilities.  In addition to instructional programs offered at the department level, the Division administers two centrally managed multi-disciplinary undergraduate and graduate programs - the Environmental Systems Program and the Mathematics and Science Education Joint Doctoral Program with SDSU. The Division also has joint faculty appointments with the School of Engineering, School of Medicine, and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Research centers at UC San Diego involving Physical Sciences faculty include: Center for Magnetic Recording Research, Center for Research in Biological Structures, Project in Geometry and Physics, Center for Astrophysics and Space Sciences, and the Center for Environmental Research and Training. The Division of Physical Sciences has an annual operating budget of $73.7 million and is home to 152 ladder-rank faculty, over 1,954 undergraduates, and over 498 graduate students.

UC San Diego's Physical Sciences programs are annually ranked among the highest in the nation. Data from the 2015 US News and World Report national rankings indicates UC San Diego graduate programs in the sciences are among the best in the nation. Chemistry (21st), earth sciences (16th), mathematics (23rd), and physics (16th) are listed near the top nationally in their overall fields. US News also gives high marks to specialties in discrete mathematics and combinations (3rd), and The US News and World Report’s Best Global Universities 2016 Edition ranked UC San Diego’s biochemistry program 6th in the world.

Position Description Summary

The University of California, San Diego invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the Division of Physical Sciences. The Division of Physical Sciences at UC San Diego is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. The Dean is responsible for providing academic, intellectual, and administrative leadership to the Division of Physical Sciences and promotes excellence in all aspects of the Division’s research, teaching, and service missions. As a key member of the University's leadership, the Dean reports directly to the Executive Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs and represents the Division at the campus, local, state, national and international levels. Successful candidates should have a distinguished record of scholarship, teaching, and service appropriate for appointment as a tenured senior professor at UC San Diego. They should also have a demonstrated commitment to education; prior experience in academic administration; a proven record in fundraising and financial management; strong demonstrated accomplishments in areas contributing to diversity, equity and inclusion; and a desire to play a leadership role in advancing UC San Diego's commitment to be a model student-centered, research-oriented, service-oriented world class public university. The Dean will be appointed to serve at 100% time.
