Defining Our Future: Academic Affairs Unit-Level Strategic Planning

Over the past 18 months, UC San Diego has undertaken a comprehensive strategic planning process to establish shared goals to define the future of UC San Diego. The development of our campuswide strategic plan has been a bottom-up, inclusive and collaborative process with input provided by all segments of our University community. This process has sharpened our mission to transform California and a diverse global society by educating; generating and disseminating knowledge, creative works and cures; and engaging in public service.

As we move from planning to implementation, it is important that we as a community leverage our collective talents and know-how to realize the vision to be a model student-centered, research-focused, service-oriented public university.

Several administrative realignments support our vision and mission, including the integration of the Student Affairs organization into the Academic Affairs family, which includes the Research Affairs and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Vice Chancellor areas. The critical partnership of Student Affairs and Academic Affairs will lead to a stronger integration of academics, co-curricular and student life - from high school, throughout their stay at UC San Diego, to their transition to alumni and members of the workforce. This focus on the overall student experience will help us to achieve our campus goal to be a student-centered university.

UC San Diego's Strategic Plan is a collective, living document that will guide our future decisions and priorities and will inform our unit-level planning processes. Our success will require that we collectively embrace change and be bold and creative in the way we approach our work, keeping these 8 words at the forefront in all that we do: Student-Centered, Research-Focused, Service-Oriented, Public University. Please join me as agents of change and in making UC San Diego the model public university we aspire to be.
