The Hellman Fellowship Program was established at UCSD in 1995 through the generosity of Chris and Warren Hellman. This is the fifteenth year for this wonderful program that is designed to provide financial support and encouragement to young faculty in the core disciplines who show capacity for great distinction in their research and creative activities. Funds awarded are primarily intended as support for research and creative activities that will enhance the individual's progress towards tenure; therefore, faculty would normally be expected to have completed at least two years as an assistant professor. Faculty who have not completed two years are eligible; however, they would need to show a significant level of productivity and independence.
Full-time, non-tenured, general campus ladder-rank faculty are eligible for consideration.
Preference in awarding Hellman Fellowships is given to eligible faculty of great promise who have not previously received a young investigator award and are approaching their third year of appointment or beyond.
Funds may be used for summer salary support, research and laboratory equipment, travel, and other research-related expenses, but may not be used to replace faculty salaries in the academic year.
The recipient must be in the assistant professor rank at the time the transfer of award funds occurs.
