Recruitment Plan

Sample of a Proposed Ad Text:

The Department of XXX of the University of California, San Diego (department Web address) invites applications for a tenure-track/tenured position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.  Fields of interest include, but are not limited to (a, b, and c).  Applicants with specialization in (d) will be given strongest consideration.  Applicants must hold Ph.D. degree and will be expected to teach and supervise students, primarily at the graduate level, conduct an extramurally funded research program, and participate in administrative functions of the department and the University.  Assistant-level candidates will be expected to show evidence of their potential through letters of recommendation and a publication record appropriate for their experience. Associate-level candidates must show evidence of a strong research record in their specialization.

The level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Salary will be based on published UC pay scales Review of applications will begin (date) and will continue until position is filled.  To apply, send a detailed resume, copies of selected recent publications, and names and addresses of at least three referees to: (Name of Contact Person or Search Committee)(Journal Code), Department of XXX - (Mail Code), University of California, San Diego, 9500 Gilman Drive, La Jolla, CA 92093-(Mail Code).  Applicants are welcome to include in their cover letters a personal statement summarizing their contributions to diversity.  UCSD is an EO/AA employer with a strong institutional commitment to excellence through diversity..

Elements required (noted as underlined and in red in above ad) include: 

  • Name of Department and University
  • Position Title(s) and description (Include tenure-track and/or tenured, if applicable)
  • Salary statement
  • Closing Date (Can also be simply stated, "Apply by (date).")
  • "EOE/AA" is the minimum requirement; the longer statement in the above paragraph is preferred if cost and space permit.
  • (It is strongly recommended that the statement regarding applicants' contributions to diversity be included in ads.)

Only names and addresses of referees should be requested in the ad.

If the search is for full or part-time and/or temporary faculty, e.g., lecturers (Unit 18 appointments), include the phrase, "with possibility of extension," in the description of the position so that an individual can be appointed for successive terms, should the need arise, without the department having to undertake another search.
