Scripps Institution of Oceanography -
Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP) |
| Position Title: |
Assistant, Associate, or Full Project Scientist |
| Job Number: |
4-671-AD |
| Description: |
The Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP) at
Scripps Institution of
Oceanography has an opening for a Project Scientist to work on a multi-year
project to develop an Integrated Real-time GPS/Seismic System, as part of
natural hazards research at the institution. The system will collect and
analyze GPS and seismic data for the purpose of estimating and disseminating
real-time positions and total displacements (dynamic, as well as static)
during all phases of the seismic cycle, from fractions of seconds to years.
Besides its intrinsic scientific use as an enhanced displacement meter
(transducer), the GPS/Seismic System will be applicable to assessing seismic
risk, disaster management, and structural monitoring. Furthermore, the
GPS/Seismic System will become an integral part of California's spatial
reference system, which is complicated by tectonic motion, seismic
displacements, and land subsidence. This is a classic application project to
parlay research and development in geodesy, seismology, and information
sciences to the realization of economic and societal benefits, by providing
tools for solving real-world problems. |
| |
Applicants should have a Ph.D. or equivalent in physics,
filtering/estimation,
seismology/geodesy and/or inertial navigation systems. Strong computer and
programming skills are required, and experience in real-time systems is
desirable. The candidate will work with two PI's, other scientists at IGPP,
and a professional staff of engineers, programmers and information
technologists. |
| |
Project Scientist is normally not a career position, but may
be renewed contingent on
performance and continuation of project funding. Appointment will be
considered at the assistant, associate or full levels. Appointees may act as
Principal Investigator or co-Principal Investigator only by exception. This
position is funded extramurally. |
| Salary: |
Rank and salary commensurate with qualifications and
experience and based on the UC salary scales. |
| Closing Date: |
Applications received by April, 2006 will receive full
consideration. |
