Anita & Marie Daulne ("Zap Mama")
Sisters Anita and Marie Daulne will not be limited by their dual Belgian/Congolesian heritage. These polyglot musicians are the co-founders of the world-renowned a cappella group "Zap Mama." "Zap Mama" unites lost sounds like Tunisian Touareg and West African Guimbri with West Coast hip-hop scratching in culture-hopping combinations.

Nuruddin Farah
Award winning Somali writer who has written eight novels and a recent non-fiction book, "Yesterday, Tomorrow Voices from the Somali Diaspora", which examines the meanings of exile and forced relocation in the contemporary world. Mr. Farah is scheduled to visit UCSD as a 2001-02 Regents Lecturer March 31 - April 8, 2002. While in San Diego, he will give a public talk, meet with UCSD students, visit area schools, and meet with the local Somali community.

Dr. Arun Netravali
President of Bell Labs and co-author of two books "Digital Picture Representation and Compression" (Plenum, 1987) and Visual Communication Systems (IEEE Press, 1989), Dr. Netravali is regarded as a pioneer in the field of digital technology and led the R&D of Bell Labs HDTV effort.

Joan Schirle
Ms. Joan Shirle's expertise on widely varying mask performance traditions represents a wealth of knowledge and first-hand experience that is increasingly rare in the modern theatre world. She is also an artistic director and founding member of the Dell'Arte Company, where she conducts apprentice programs. She will perform her solo performance, SECOND SKIN on Jan. 11 and 12 at 8:00 in Galbraith Hall 157. Admission is free.

Jaap Schröder
Mr. Jaap Schröder is an internationally-renowned violinist with a many-sided career chamber music player, baroque violinist-soloist, conductor, and teacher. Mr. Schröder has helped to found a number of pioneering chamber ensembles, such as the Esterhazy and Smithson Quartets. Mr. Schröder and his Michigan based Atlantis Trio actually present classical and romantic programs on period instruments.

Nilita Vachani
Nilita Vachani, feminist independent film-maker whose award-winning documentaries examine the complexities of gender in a global context, is scheduled to visit UCSD as a Regents' Lecturer May 14-19, 2002. Events will include a screening of her most recent documentary, "When Mother Comes Home for Christmas," winner of the 1996 Festival dei Popoli and the 1997 Festival Internazionale Cinema Delle Donne awards for best documentary.
