DEAN OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO
The University of California, San Diego invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the Division of Biological Sciences. The Dean provides academic, intellectual, and administrative leadership to the Division of Biological Sciences and promotes excellence in all aspects of the Division’s research, teaching, and service missions. As a key member of the University’s leadership, the Dean reports directly to the Senior Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs and represents the Division at the campus, local, state and national levels. Successful candidates should have prior experience in academic administration, and a distinguished record of scholarship, teaching, and service appropriate for appointment as a tenured senior professor at UCSD. The Dean will hold the Richard C. Atkinson Chair in the Biological Sciences. UC San Diego, established in 1960 as part of the 10-campus University of California, has rapidly achieved the status as one of the top institutions in the U.S. for higher education and research. UCSD is ranked fifth in the nation in federal research and development expenditures, with annual research funding of $728.3 million, and an overall budget of $2 billion. UCSD ranks 6th in the nation in National Academy of Sciences membership. The National Research Council ranks UCSD 10th in the nation in the quality of its faculty and graduate programs. The Division of Biological Sciences includes four academic Sections: Cell and Developmental Biology; Ecology, Behavior, and Evolution; Molecular Biology; and Neurobiology. With 75 ladder-rank faculty, eight undergraduate and four graduate degree programs, an annual operating budget of $11 million, and research expenditures of approximately $30 million annually, the division is expanding its areas of scientific discovery, making significant advances on the educational front, and developing new community partnerships. In April 2006, US News & World Report ranked UCSD Biological Sciences 12th in the nation; neuroscience/neurobiology ranked 2nd; genetics/genomics/bioinformatics ranked 6th; and cell biology ranked 10th. A September 2006 study by the Milken Institute ranked UCSD 6th among the world’s universities in the strength of its biotech research and 8th in the number of biotech patents issued. This is an exciting time of growth and development for UCSD Biological Sciences. The Dean will play a crucial role in leading this growth. The Search Committee will begin reviewing candidates immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Nominations and applications (resume, statement of interest, email address, and names of references) should be submitted electronically (Microsoft Word files preferred), in confidence, to the Search Committee Chair, Dr. Jeffrey Elman, c/o: Dr. Ilene H. Nagel
