Academic Affairs Student Apprenticeship Program (AASAP) WHY AASAP? By providing departments within the Academic Affairs Vice Chancellor area with a complete package of free administrative and consultative services, UCSD AASAP saves department time and resources in developing substantive positions; advertising apprenticeships; recruiting top-notch students; and following up with participants for supplemental career development services (i.e. resumé writing, cover letter editing, job interviewing skills and tips, etc.). As a program devoted to fulfilling departments’ and students’ needs, UCSD AASAP strives to assist the University in its training, succession planning, and recruitment goals. HOW TO POST AN APPRENTICESHIP Submit a completed Apprenticeship Listing Form to the Academic Affairs Student Apprenticeship Program (AASAP) Coordinator, Linda Thai (aasap@ucsd.edu). You will be asked to identify a supervisor for the position; provide a description of the organization and apprenticeship; and list the skills required for the position. The AASAP Coordinator will review the Apprenticeship Listing Form and post approved apprenticeships on the career services websites for UCSD and other local universities. Advertising will also be extended to various other student association and department websites. RECRUITMENT, SELECTION & ORIENTATION All student apprenticeship applications are first routed to the AASAP Coordinator and then forwarded to the Department Supervisor (as identified on the Apprenticeship Listing Form). The AASAP Coordinator is available to prescreen applications and forward only the most qualified student applicants. If you would like this service, please check “yes” on the Apprenticeship Listing Form (see “Apprenticeship Information” section of the form). Selection & Orientation After the the final candidate has been selected, the Department Supervisor shall email the AASAP Coordinator (aasap@ucsd.edu), who will then meet with the selected student one-on-one for a 30-minute orientation. In the orientation, the Coordinator and student will complete paperwork that formalizes the volunteer appointment and review expectations of the program. ACADEMIC CREDIT FOR APPRENTICESHIPS (OPTIONAL) Academic credit for apprenticeships and internships is administered through the UCSD Academic Internship Program (AIP). Students interested in academic credit are responsible for directly contacting AIP to make arrangements. If the apprenticeship description meets AIP guidelines, then students may earn four (4), eight (8), or twelve (12) units of academic credit. Beyond working a minimum number of hours over a ten-week period, the student must also complete a research paper/project supervised by a faculty advisor and an AIP exit evaluation. For best results, students should start planning for academic credit for apprenticeships and internships at least one quarter in advance. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
