SUBJECT: Announcement of the 2008 Betsy Faught Award
I am delighted to announce that Marjorie Hardy, Business Officer of the
department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, has been named the recipient of the 2008
Betsy Faught Award. The Award recognizes excellence and outstanding
achievement in the management of General Campus academic units, and honors the
memory of Betsy Faught, an exceptional department manager who adeptly and
skillfully managed an academic program at UCSD for more than twenty years.
The award recipient is selected by a group of peers based on nominations from
within the Academic Affairs units. Marjorie will be honored at a special
ABA recognition ceremony this spring.
Marjorie’s service to the campus began over 30 years ago in the UCSD Alumni
Association. Shortly thereafter she was recruited to Academic Affairs as a
Program Rep in the Department of Theatre. Marjorie has remained with Academic
Affairs ever since, working her way up the staff ranks in the Warren College
Provost’s Office, the departments of Music and Physics, and the San Diego
Supercomputer Center (SDSC). During her tenure at SDSC, Marjorie
established the Center’s business office as a part of UCSD, training SDSC
business office staff. In 2001 Marjorie obtained her first business officer
position when she returned to the Music Department, joining a unit in need of
her strong management skills.
In 2006 Marjorie assumed her current position, as Chief Operating Officer in
Chem/Biochem. It is here that Marjorie has likely had the greatest impact. She
arrived to a department suffering from serious fiscal deficits and a crisis in
staff morale. According to Chem/Biochem Chair Robert Continetti, “it was in this
environment that Marjorie came to our rescue.” After conducting a thorough
analysis of the department’s fiscal condition, Marjorie proposed and gained
approval for a number of measures that have positioned Chem/Biochem on a solid
road to financial recovery. And through her guidance, Marjorie rebuilt a staff
environment of strong work ethic and mutual respect. In the words of Physical
Sciences Assistant Dean Barbara Seipel, Marjorie possesses “a unique blend of
extreme competency, good common sense, strength of character and an
indefatigable commitment to her department and to the University.”
Beyond her departments, Marjorie has an outstanding record of service to the
University. She currently serves as a member of the ABA Executive Board and has
a long history of service on ABA committees. She has also served on a number of
important campus committees, including the Human Resources Advisory Team (HRAT)
and the 2005 search committee for the Dean of the Division of Arts & Humanities.
Marjorie’s enormous impact on the departments in which she has served as well as
her long and dedicated service to the University make her an ideal recipient for
this year's Betsy Faught Award. Please join me in congratulating Marjorie on
this well-deserved honor.
