Instructions for MSP Submission and Classification Review
Position descriptions that you wish to have considered for MSP classification must first be routed to the Office of the SVCAA for endorsement. Please route job cards to Bobb Barile at rbarile@ucsd.edu. You should attach to the job description a copy of the organizational chart for the unit. Forward any other supporting documentation to the same email address.

Once the job card has been endorsed by the Office of the SVCAA it will be routed to campus HR for review. The assigned Compensation Analyst will communicate directly with the department as to the process and status of the position - the supervisor will receive the following message:

I have received a request for classification of your new XXX position.   This request was endorsed by the VC Office via Debbie McGraw on DATE.  I will review the request and contact you to set up an in-person meeting or telephone conference to discuss this position.  There are currently XX positions in the queue ahead of your request.   Typically from the time our Compensation Unit receives the request to the time the analysis is complete and it goes through the Compensation and Classification Advisory Committee (CCAC) and approval process, the entire MSP review process will take approximately 30 days.   I anticipate that I will be able to begin working on this request by DATE.   Please let me know who I should contact to discuss the position.   Also, please let me know if you would like an in-person meeting or prefer to simply discuss this position over the telephone.

Here is an overview of the MSP review and classification process for your reference.

(1) After a department submits a request with all of the required supporting documents (organizational chart and supplement/s), a Compensation Analyst reviews the request and discusses the position with the department (either with the supervisor or the individual that the supervisor designates as the appropriate contact).

(2) The classification decision will be based upon a review of the job description and supporting material submitted by the department, the classification specifications, a comparison with comparator positions, and discussions with the department that submitted the request and possibly other departments with comparator positions and a review by CCAC. The Compensation Analyst’s decision is communicated directly to the supervisor upon completion of the review. (3)  In addition, if the requested title is a MSP level Programmer Analyst or Computer Resource Manager title, the job description will be sent by the Compensation Analyst to the Programmer Analyst Advisory Committee (PAAC).  The Compensation Analyst’s decision is communicated directly to the supervisor upon completion of the review.

Please note that MSP positions can be posted in advance pending MSP classification.   Therefore to help expedite the hiring process, you may want to prepare and submit an on-line requisition at your earliest convenience.

Once submitted to campus HR, communications regarding the request should be directed to the assigned compensation analyst.
