Kyra Randall - Summer Session (Kyra was nominated with Agustin Albarran)
Three years ago, Kyra and Agustin had a vision, keeping within the
Universitys vision of expanding outreach to K-12. They thought it would be wonderful
to have underrepresented first generation attend college. They approached Mae Brown and
Jil Warn with their plan. It was an unprecedented approach to have two completely
different departments collaborate and facilitate and fund a program together. The program
was approved and the "Middle School Academy" was born. Eighty San Diego, South
Bay and Los Angeles students were recruited to come to UCSD for a week, take classes, live
in dorms and experience UCSD for a week, and most importantly the students did not have to
pay.

working environment where culture and personal identity is celebrated. ACS is
a department where all staff work in a respectful and rewarding environment with
opportunity for promotion. During this past year, ACS added its first
