Near Relative Employment
The appointment of near relatives in the same department is governed by the
Personnel Policies for Staff Members (PPSM),
Section 21. G. All requests for hires of this nature must be approved by
Campus Human Resources prior to an offer of employment.
Departments wishing to hire a near relative
should answer the questions listed below as they relate to the proposed hire.
The request should then be forwarded to Bobb Barile (bbarile@ucsd.edu)
in the Office of the SVCAA. The Office of the SVCAA will review the
request, choose whether or not to endorse it, and forward it on to the campus
Director of Employment and Community Outreach for final review and approval.

- Was this an Open Recruitment or Short Term Exception?
- Will the department hire another candidate if the near relative request is
denied?
- Will the near relative candidate…
- Work in the same unit/department or VC area as the UC employee?
- Report directly to the UC employee or vice versa?
- Report to the same supervisor as the UC employee?
- Work in the same location or in close proximity to UC employee?
- Would the near relative candidate and UC employee work within the same
unit/department/VC area but report to others?
If yes, will the near relative candidate or UC employee have decision making
authority or influence on salary, job responsibilities or other work related
activities?
- Is the near relative on a reporting line over the UC employee or vice
versa (Provide reporting line including names and titles or an Organizational
Chart)?
- Family relationship of the near relative to UC employee? (i.e. mom, dad,
brother)
- Does the near relative have unique qualifications for this position to
support this request?
- How large is the working unit within the department?
- Does the department’s immediate supervisor of
the near relative endorse this near relative appointment? (This is kept
confidential)
