The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UC San Diego (http://www-chem.ucsd.edu) has an opening for a Lecturer to begin July 1, 2008. We seek an outstanding teacher wanting a permanent faculty position. The appointment will likely be “with the potential of security of employment (PSOE)”. An LPSOE position parallels that of a tenure-track assistant professor but the requirement is for outstanding teaching along with scholarly publications focusing on chemical education. However, more senior applicants at the level of SOE are also invited to apply. The position is full-time and will involve lecture and laboratory courses in lower division chemistry, possible upper division instruction in any specialization, curriculum development, writing lab manuals, assisting with the training of teaching assistants, and other tasks related to undergraduate instruction. Candidates must have a Ph.D. degree and a record of excellence in teaching.

Position Title: Part-Time Academic Coordinator / Lecturer

The Department of Linguistics at the University of California, San Diego (http://ling.ucsd.edu/) invites applications for a position as Academic Coordinator/Lecturer for Spanish in our Linguistics Language Program (LLP). This position is at 100% time, for the full academic year beginning July 1, 2008, and ending June 30, 2009, with the possibility of extension.

 

The Academic Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of our Spanish program, including placement, course design, syllabi, assignment of grades, and materials development and selection, as well as training, supervision and evaluation of TAs. The Academic Coordinator conducts weekly TA meetings for each level, observes classes and meets with TAs individually to discuss their performance. In addition, the Academic Coordinator for Spanish meets regularly with the Academic Coordinators for other languages, the LLP staff, and the LLP Director to set program goals and establish and implement overall policies. This includes participation as a member of the planning team for our annual three-day workshop for TAs prior to the start of classes in September, in which the Academic Coordinator plays a role as presenter, trainer and facilitator. The Academic Coordinator for Spanish also teaches one course each academic year as a Lecturer.

 

Qualifications: The successful applicant will be a native or near-native speaker of Spanish and have a very good command of English. The applicant must have a record of excellence in language teaching, a vocabulary and knowledge of the grammar in the language equivalent to that of a university-educated speaker, a deep familiarity with the cultures where the language is spoken, an ability to serve as a model for students by speaking clearly and intelligibly in the classroom, and an ability to work well with a diverse group of instructors. Formal training in linguistics and/or language teaching is highly desirable but not required. The candidate must hold at least an M.A. (or equivalent) degree.

The Department of Linguistics at the University of California, San Diego (http://ling.ucsd.edu) invites applications for a part-time lecturer position in Heritage Korean. The lectureship is 33% to 100% time, for the full academic year beginning July 1,2007, and ending June 30, 2008 with a possibility of extension. Classes are intended for heritage speakers with good comprehension skills, varying degrees of fluency and literacy, and significant non-native features in their output. All lectureships involve teaching classes devoted to either communicative and cultural competence or to linguistic analysis of the language of instruction. In addition to instruction and grading, responsibilities also include designing course syllabi, preparing all course materials (including exams), and attending HLP meetings during the academic year and the annual HLP fall workshop prior to the start of classes in September.

 

The successful applicant will be a native or near-native speaker of Korean, with experience teaching Korean to non-native students of the language, preferably in North America or Western Europe. Demonstrable training in modem linguistics or ACTFL/OPI certification in Korean is preferred. Prior experience researching or instructing heritage language populations is highly desirable but not required. Ability to work together in coordination with another instructor and the Academic Coordinator as a team is essential. The candidate must hold at least a B.A. (or equivalent) degree.

We anticipate openings for temporary positions in studio art (painting, sculpture, drawing, and hybrid practices), computing in the arts, digital editing, film, video, photography, performance, art history/criticism (Western and Non-western), photo history and film history. We seek a historian of European art of the 17th and 18th centuries in any area of specialization for the full year to teach two courses per term for three academic quarters running from late September 2007 to mid-June 2008. Courses will include introductory surveys, specialized upper-division lecture courses and undergraduate seminars. Candidates must be able to offer at least one course (lecture or seminar) on theory. Experienced teachers might be assigned a graduate seminar in our innovative Ph.D. program in Art History, Theory and Criticism in lieu of one undergraduate course.

Appointments will likely be part-time, possibly full-time, from one quarter up to one year, with the possibility of renewal. Positions available beginning the 2007/2008 academic year contingent upon funding. MFA or PhD preferred, but ABDs considered.
