Dean of Social Sciences

The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the Division of Social Sciences (http://weber.ucsd.edu).  Comprising nine academic departments (Anthropology, Cognitive Science, Communication, Economics, Ethnic Studies, Linguistics, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology) and a wide range of interdisciplinary programs and research units, Social Sciences is the largest academic division at UCSD in numbers of faculty and undergraduate students.  The major research centers and institutes with which Social Sciences faculty are involved include, but are not limited to, the centers for Brain and Cognition; Human Development; Comparative Immigration Studies; Iberian and Latin American Studies; the Study of Race and Ethnicity; US-Mexican Studies; and Research on Educational Equity, Assessment and Teaching Excellence; and the Institute for International, Comparative, and Area Studies; the Institute for Neural Computation; and the Kavli Institute for Brain and Mind.

Social Sciences currently is home to 217 faculty members, 7,610 undergraduates, and 645 graduate students, with plans for growth throughout the decade ahead.  Almost half of all bachelor’s degrees awarded at UCSD are in the social sciences, and five of the top ten majors – psychology, economics, communication, political science, and international studies – are social science disciplines.  The division is home to nationally and internationally recognized faculty, including three Nobel Laureates and four MacArthur “genius” grant recipients, and ten division faculty hold endowed chairs.  Virtually all of the division’s programs rank in the top 20 nationally, and many rank in the top 10.

The dean provides academic, intellectual, and administrative leadership for the entire Division of Social Sciences, and a primary responsibility is promoting excellence in all aspects of the division’s research, teaching, and service missions.  The dean is responsible for management of the division’s resources, including faculty and staff, budget, and physical facilities; he or she will also be expected to work closely with the Development Office to cultivate major gifts in support of the division’s ambitious agenda for ever greater stature and a broadening of academic initiatives and activities.  The dean plays a leadership role in the division’s cross-disciplinary collaborations with other divisions and schools throughout the campus.  The Division of Social Sciences has a strong commitment to achieving diversity, and the search committee seeks an individual who shares that commitment.

As a key member of the University’s leadership team, the dean reports directly to the Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and represents the Division of Social Sciences at the campus, local, state, national, and international levels.  Successful candidates should have prior experience in academic administration (preferably including a term as department chair) and a distinguished record of scholarship, teaching, and service appropriate for appointment as a tenured senior professor in the division.  The salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Candidates are encouraged to submit their materials by February 15, 2008, for full consideration. The search committee will continue reviewing candidate files until the position is filled.   Nominations and applications (curriculum vitae, an optional statement of interest, e-mail address, and names of references) should be submitted electronically (Microsoft Word files preferred), in confidence, to:
