The University of California, San Diego, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (SSPPS)' (web: http:/pharmacy.ucsd.edu) is recruiting for an exceptional faculty member, at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor levels, in the area of Pharmacogenomics, with expertise in pharmacology, pharmaceutics, genetics, and/or pharmaceutical chemistry. The linkage with pharmacogenomics could be based on pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic considerations. It is envisioned that this faculty position will interface with the joint SSPPS and School of Medicine program in Human Genetics. Faculty candidates are expected to lead coordinated group research efforts, with active research grant support. Candidates will participate in the education and research of pharmacy, medical and graduate students in areas of pharmacogenomics and related topics. Exceptional laboratory space is available in the new Pharmaceutical Sciences Building at UCSD. Abundant opportunities exist for fruitful collaborations with investigators in the La Jolla scientific area composed of UCSD, the Salk Institute, the Scripps Research Institute, the Burnham Institute, as well as private pharmaceutical and biotechnology groups.

  Candidates are expected to have a track record of established scientific and academic achievements demonstrated by publication record and grant funding, combined with documented skills in teaching and mentoring. One appointment will serve as the medical director for the division. The new faculty will expand upon existing basic research excellence in novel target discovery, natural product screening and pediatric clinical pharmacology & pharmacokinetics. These appointments will require proven accomplishment and success in extramural funding in areas of basic, translational, or clinical pharmacology and drug development research, demonstrated leadership capabilities, and excellence in graduate and professional student teaching.

Position Title: Full Professor & Associate Dean for Scientific Affairs

Description: The Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (SSPPS) is seeking candidates for a tenured faculty and deanship position. The faculty appointment will be at the full professor level, and candidates will be expected to carry a well funded research program related to drug discovery and development and/or characterization of pharmaceutical targets. The position is open to individuals with a Ph.D., Pharm.D., or M.D. degree having research interests in pharmacology, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutics and pharmacogenomics. The successful candidate would be expected to carry a leading role in the development of one of the above disciplines in SSPPS, that also encompasses Ph.D. and postdoctoral training. Research laboratory and academic space will be in the new Pharmaceutical Sciences Building containing core instrumentation and facilities for contemporary genomics and proteomics studies. The associate dean responsibilities will include recruitment of faculty into positions related to the above disciplines, mentoring of new faculty and assisting the Dean and faculty in further development of a combined Pharm.D. – Ph.D. program with a chemical and therapeutic emphasis. Leadership experience in graduate education and oversight of research programs will be important assets to furthering cross-campus academic and research programs that extend to participating institutions on the La Jolla mesa.

UCSD is establishing an interdepartmental initiative in medicinal chemistry.  We invite applications at all levels from outstandingly creative chemists with interests in such areas as organic synthesis or the characterization of natural products.  The ideal candidates would be eligible for joint appointment among UCSD units including the new School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.  It is planned that this initiative will lead to the hiring of six or more new faculty members over a period of perhaps three years, and that successful early candidates will play a major role in shaping this initiative.  New and renovated space on campus in La Jolla will be available for this initiative.  Opportunities abound for interaction with groups in Health Sciences, Marine Sciences, the General Campus at UCSD in La Jolla, The Scripps Research Institute, the Salk Institute, and with other nearby academic centers.  Major new research campuses being opened near UCSD by Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, Merck, and other companies offer additional opportunities for collaboration, as do the dozens of smaller startup companies nearby.
