Description:

The Education Studies program at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) has an opening for an Assistant Project Scientist position with a preferred start date of July 1,2008. Appointment length: Two years, with possibility of extension depending on program needs and funding.

 

Responsibilities include:

 
  • Review scholarly literature on adolescent literacy, literacy development in content areas (e.g., mathematics, science).

  • Examine district documents for insights into effectiveness of literacy program.

  • Work with project evaluation team to coordinate data collection with participating school sites and staff.

  • Attend district meetings as representative of evaluation team.

  • Engage in all aspects of data collection and analysis for evaluation, including visiting schools, observing classrooms and students, interviewing teachers and key district staff, administering surveys, transcription and survey scanning, coding data, and complex quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis.

  • Take detailed field notes of classroom observations, transcribe and organize for review by evaluation team. Preparation of case studies of students, teachers, and/or classrooms.

  • Aid in preparing quarterly and annual evaluation reports.

  • Aid in development of proposals for continuation funding, as well as manuscripts for journal submission.

  • Present study findings at professional conferences, district board meetings, and other professional venues.

 

Qualifications:

 
  • PhD in education research and evaluation, sociology or related field

  • Experience.in experimental study design, student-level randomization procedures, large-scale survey administration, and research data collection in large, urban school settings

  • Ability to perform complex quantitative and qualitative data analysis and Interpretation

  • Ability to develop and maintain rapport with educational staff and students

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Experience writing proposals, reports, and professional publications

  • Knowledge of Excel, nvivo, Teleform, SPSS, HLM, and other statisticallethnographic software programs desired.

  • Knowledge of scholarly literature related to English learners, students with disabilities desired

The High Energy Physics Group (http://hep.ucsd.edu) at UCSD seeks one or two researchers interested in a long-term leadership position in the group. Our group is playing a leadership role in the DAQ of the CMS experiment at CERN. Our group has been responsible for the development, deployment, and operations of the Event-Builder at CMS, a system comprising several hundred to a few thousand computers, and Myrinet as well as Gigabit networking infrastructure. The candidates are expected to play a key role in all aspects of this effort. Strong technical skills, and an interest in day-to-day operations of computing infrastructure are required in addition to strong written and verbal skills. At least one of the two positions requires a Ph.D. in a data intensive science, e.g. particle physics; postdoctoral experience or equivalent preferred. Title and level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Description: The UCSD Department of Psychiatry announces the availability of an Assistant Project Scientist position in neuropsychology. This junior level research position is based at the HIV Neurobehavioral Research Center (Igor Grant, M.D., Director) and will assist Dr. Grant with the implementation of studies examining the neurocognitive impairments associated with HIV infection and methamphetamine abuse. This individual will be expected to perform statistical analyses, write manuscripts and develop his/her own program of research. The incumbent will collaborate closely with investigators in neurology, neuropathology, and imaging, as well as other neuropsychologists (e.g., Robert Heaton, Ph.D.). Demonstrated interest/productivity in neuropsychological research is required. Previous HIV and/or substance abuse research experience is desired, but not necessary.

The scientist will be part of a molecular imaging team and will support several investigators utilizing emulsions and microbubbles with different surface chemistry to allow labeling or targeting to various tissues and organs. In addition to manufacturing emulsions and microbubbles, the applicant will be expected to optimize formulations of emulsions, microbubbles and other novel contrast agents for specific imaging or therapeutic function.

Position Title: Project Scientist

Description: The Department of Radiology is seeking a Project Scientist at the Center for Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging to manage the Varian 7T small animal imager. The Center houses four magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems dedicated for research in humans and animal models. This position will join an active group of physicists, neuroscientists, and other basic scientists to develop MRI applications for cardiac, cancer, and neuroscience studies, and actively participate in planned research activities for the 7T system, working closely with research groups on the design and implementation of experiments. This position will have oversight of the daily operations of the scanner, including the development of pulse sequence and physiological monitoring systems, communication with the manufacturer on issues related to scanner performance, and investigator training.
Qualifications: Ph.D. degree or equivalent. Experience with MRI hardware and software required, though not necessarily with Varian systems. Experience with small animal imaging and with pulse sequence programming and construction of radiofrequency coils is preferred.
Salary: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience in accordance with the UC policy.

Position Title: Specialist

Description: The Center for Atmospheric Sciences at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) invites applications to an opening in its Project Atmospheric Brown Clouds (ABC).  The position will be in the Specialist Series of the UC academic personnel system, starting salaries will be within the UC academic salary schedule and commensurate with experience. Initial appointment will be for 2 years, subsequent reappointments subject to performance and availability of funds.
Interested applicants are expected to have PhD in atmospheric sciences or environment engineering or related fields with at least 4 years experience in aerosol instrument development and surface and airborne deployment in international field experiments.
  The incumbent will report to the Project's principal investigator and project manager.  Duties will be emphasized on the science administration and less on the research, data analysis and publication.  Duties include to organize and operate the observation program including:  selection, acquisition, development, modification, installation and operation of aerosol and cloud instruments including those for aircraft.  Organize the regional capacity building and training for Asian countries participating in the ABC program.  Actively participate and at times take lead in writing reports and proposals and submission to national and international funding agencies.  Extensive foreign travels to remote locations in Asia will be expected.
  The successful candidate will be expected to possess: excellent instrumentation and engineering experience and skills; demonstrated computing skills in setting up and maintain data archiving, retrieval and transfer over the internet; demonstrated leadership quality and ability in communicating, working and interacting with US and international scientists, students and technicians to successfully carry out the assignments and contribute positively to the progress and growth of Project ABC.
Salary: Appointment rank and compensation will be commensurate with background and experience and based on published UC salary scales.

Applications are solicited for a Postgraduate Researcher or Assistant Project Scientist position with the Advanced Global Atmospheric Gases Experiment (AGAGE) program (http://agage.eas.gatech.edu/),an international long-term study of trace gases that are active in global warming and ozone depletion, with experimental headquarters at Scripps (http://scripps.llcsd.edu/). Potential candidates should have a PhD in atmospheric chemistry or a related field, with a strong background in experimental instrumentation and methods. The level of appointment will be commensurate with experience and professional standing, including publication record.

  Expertise in gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and in computer data processing, with a strong emphasis on precise and meticulous work, is especially desirable. The successful candidate will work in all aspects of the AGAGE program including laboratory and field work and data interpretation. The initial appointment will be for two years and may be renewed. Appointees may act as principal or co-principal investigator by exception.
Salary: Salary will be according to University of California salary scales.

Description: The Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP) at Scripps Institution of
Oceanography has an opening for a Project Scientist to work on a multi-year project to develop an Integrated Real-time GPS/Seismic System, as part of natural hazards research at the institution. The system will collect and analyze GPS and seismic data for the purpose of estimating and disseminating real-time positions and total displacements (dynamic, as well as static) during all phases of the seismic cycle, from fractions of seconds to years. Besides its intrinsic scientific use as an enhanced displacement meter (transducer), the GPS/Seismic System will be applicable to assessing seismic risk, disaster management, and structural monitoring. Furthermore, the GPS/Seismic System will become an integral part of California's spatial reference system, which is complicated by tectonic motion, seismic displacements, and land subsidence. This is a classic application project to parlay research and development in geodesy, seismology, and information sciences to the realization of economic and societal benefits, by providing tools for solving real-world problems.
  Applicants should have a Ph.D. or equivalent in physics, filtering/estimation,
seismology/geodesy and/or inertial navigation systems. Strong computer and
programming skills are required, and experience in real-time systems is desirable. The candidate will work with two PI's, other scientists at IGPP, and a professional staff of engineers, programmers and information technologists.
  Project Scientist is normally not a career position, but may be renewed contingent on
performance and continuation of project funding. Appointment will be considered at the assistant, associate or full levels. Appointees may act as Principal Investigator or co-Principal Investigator only by exception. This position is funded extramurally.
Salary: Rank and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on the UC salary scales.
