Business Officer Academy (BOA) What is a Business Officer? The Academic Affairs Business Officer Academy (BOA) is an innovative staff enrichment program that provides training, guidance and support to staff members who aspire to become business officers. The BOA is a two-year program centered around case study, small group discussions and personal interactions such that the participants gain an understanding and appreciation of the role of the business officer at UCSD.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA AND APPLICATION
First consideration will be given to those applicants who have had work experience in two or more functional areas during their career. Functional areas include fiscal administration, human resources, academic personnel, student affairs, etc. The Information Session for the 2009 BOA Program has been scheduled for Wednesday, October 29, 2008 from 8:30am - 10:00am in 111A Chancellor's Complex Conference Room. This session is open to all campus career staff. Eligible and interested staff will apply for the program online. Applications will be filed electronically and routed through the employee’s supervisor for approval of release time to participate in the program. You will also need to upload a current copy of your resume (Word or pdf format preferred) with your application. Applications are due by Wednesday, November 21, 2007 and your supervisor's endorsement must be received by Monday, November 26, 2007. Please note the application deadline has passed to participate in the 2008 Program. However, applications will again be available in November 2008 to participate in the 2009 Program. Since it may take you several sessions to complete your application, an editable Word template is available to compose/edit your responses to the questions. Once you feel your application is ready for submission you may cut and paste responses from that document into the on-line application. Only on-line application will be accepted. YEAR 1 FORMATPre-training Sessions (mandatory for all participants): One week prior to each module, participants attend a pre-training session which offers a comprehensive overview and definition of the upcoming module. Training Modules (mandatory for all participants): Training modules are broken up into seven (7) functional areas: Human Resources, Financial/Budget, Academic Personnel, Student Affairs, Information Technology, Facilities Management, and Management/Leadership. The seven modules will be scheduled every six weeks beginning in January 2008 and ending in November 2008 from 8:00AM – 12:00 noon. (See program schedule for details - modules will not be scheduled during the summer). Participants must be able to commit to attending all training modules. Each module is divided into 2 components:Scenarios (3 hours): Scenarios encourage participants to focus on different ways of thinking about issues, thought processes and various approaches that business officers need to employ. The group is presented situations in a particular functional area and asked how they would go about solving the problem. Each scenario is based on the premise that the participants have just become a new Business Officer in the “Department of Fiction.” There is an additional component of each training module in which committee members and participants share their career path with the group (2 at each module) Mentoring: Each participant is assigned a mentor, a member of the BOA Committee who serves as a reference and a resource. Mentors contact mentees after each session to get feedback and also provide on-going one-on-one guidance to the participants.YEAR 2 FORMAT Activities planned for year two of the program include:
