SUBJECT: Announcement of the 2007 Betsy Faught Award
I am delighted to announce that Jan Cox, Business Officer of the department
of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), has been named the recipient of
the 2007 Betsy Faught Award. The Award recognizes excellence and outstanding
achievement in the management of General Campus academic units, and honors the
memory of Betsy Faught, an exceptional department manager who adeptly and
skillfully managed an academic program at UCSD for more than twenty years. The
award recipient is selected by a group of peers based on nominations from within
the Academic Affairs units. Jan will be honored at a special ABA recognition
ceremony on April 5, 2007.
Jan’s service to the UCSD campus began over 30 years ago in the Department of
Medicine. In 1990 Academic Affairs recruited Jan into the Business Officer
position in the department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE). Jan
remained with CSE for over 10 years, during a period of extraordinary growth for
that department. Jan has served as the business officer for ECE, the largest
department in the Jacobs School of Engineering, since 2001. In his nomination,
ECE Chair Paul Yu cites the following outstanding qualities and accomplishments
that mark Jan’s tenure: anticipating the needs of the department, improving
staff-faculty relations, and effectively managing the department’s budget and
staff. Jan’s nomination further states that her "unselfish and open style of
management has won her faculty and staff support within ECE. Many staff members
have realized, only after the fact, the very hard work that she had done on
their behalf."
Jan’s contributions to UCSD extend far beyond her department. She has been an
active member of the ABA, serving on many committees, including as chair of the
ABA Executive committee. Her campus service includes active membership on
business process teams and HR advisory committees, and planning the successful
campus Sharecase event. Among her colleagues Jan has earned a reputation as an
expert in Human Resources. They often call on her for advice and guidance. Jan
generously shares her experience and knowledge and currently serves on the
Business Officer Academy steering committee, a staff development program that
provides training, guidance and support to staff who aspire to become business
officers.
Jan’s effective department management and long and dedicated service to the
University make her an ideal recipient for this year's Betsy Faught Award.
Please join me in congratulating Jan on this well-deserved honor.
