Learning Objectives and Core Competencies

Inventory of Educational Effectiveness Indicators

WASC Requirement – Five Core Competencies

In 2013, UC San Diego’s regional accreditor, the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC), added a new requirement to its Handbook of Accreditation that institutions, at review time, describe how their learning outcomes address each of five core competencies:

  • Written Communication
  • Oral Communication
  • Quantitative Reasoning
  • Information Literacy
  • Critical Thinking

Discovering and Revising Current Practices

05/2016 - 9/2016
The Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Education conducted a preliminary analysis of every College, Department, and Program Inventory of Educational Effectiveness Indicators (IEEI) to identify where these core competencies were already part of the program learning outcomes.

10/2016 - 12/2016
All Colleges, Departments, and Programs revised and reorganized the inventories to more intentionally include the five core competencies and to add more descriptive language in those cases when these core competencies were already part of their program learning outcomes.

Assessing the Work to Date

01/2017 - 04/2017:

Once the inventories were reviewed, the Office of the DUE conducted a second analysis of the inventories for every College, Department, and Program to identify where core competencies were or were not included in the inventories.

Outcomes:

  • All six Colleges have inventories that describe how all five core competencies are included in their curriculum.
  • Over half of Departments and Programs have submitted revised inventories. Most core competencies are included in the inventories.

Integrating the Five Core Competencies

05/2017 - 07/2018

Departments, Colleges, and Programs undergoing Program Review were asked to revise their inventories in the new format and to work with the Teaching and Learning Commons to further develop learning outcomes for each competency, as appropriate.

Publishing the Revised Inventories

08/2018 - Present
Departments, Colleges, and Programs are finalizing current revisions to their inventories and the inventories are being published online. Everyone is encouraged to work with the Teaching and Learning Commons to further develop learning outcomes for each competency, as appropriate.
