This program provides excellent opportunities for advanced graduate students to obtain mentored teaching experience. At the same time, it increases Summer Session course offerings to undergraduate students. Each General Campus department or program is invited to nominate up to two advanced graduate students to teach in Summer Session as participants in this professional development program.
The Summer 2012 nomination deadline has passed.
Graduate student teaching fellows will receive the regular Summer Session salary as Associate-In and a $1,200 payment for participation in the training component of the program. The program entails guidance by a faculty mentor, eight seminars offered during spring quarter by the Center for Teaching Development (CTD) and weekly informal meetings during the summer. Fellows are provided feedback during the course, and they have an opportunity to participate in a post-course evaluation. The mentoring experience, by faculty, CTD, and former summer graduate teaching fellows, are key components of the program. Previous years' fellows have praised the value of this opportunity. Priority will be given to graduate students who would be first-time Associates-In.
All Summer Session courses require a minimum enrollment of 10. Unfortunately, courses will be cancelled if they do not meet the minimum and the fellowship will be voided. Please propose courses carefully, choosing those with a historically, successful track record of being offered during summer session.
Nominations received by the due date will be reviewed by an interdisciplinary selection committee, chaired by the Associate Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education, and approved by the Executive Vice Chancellor. Priority will be given to graduate students who have not previously held Associate-In appointments. Award recipients will be announced at the end of fall quarter. Information on Summer Session can be found on their website. Any changes to the fellowship award should be made by the department chair and addressed to AVC Sawrey.
